SiPort Recruits CEO as the Startup Moves on After Homicide Tragedy
February 26, 2010
SiPort, a supplier of integrated circuit platform solutions for digital terrestrial broadcast receivers, brought in David Rolston as CEO and has been on the job for the past month. Rolston brings to SiPort more than 25 years experience in the technology industry and a successful track record in building profitable businesses in both start-ups and multinational market leaders. He takes over the reigns from Aiman Kabakibo, a founder and interim CEO of SiPort. Aiman assumes a new role, executive VP and founder, responsible for SiPort's products and the handset market segment. The company became the leader in HD Radio IC shipments. Most notably, SiPort is the HD Radio chip supplier to Microsoft's Zune HD personal media player.

Rolston most recently served as chairman and CEO of Forterra Systems, a provider of enterprise-grade virtual-world software technology. Before joining Fonterra, he was general manager and vice president of engineering at ATI. where he managed the development of advanced graphics/video chips used in popular personal computers, mobile phones, HD televisions, and many well-known gaming consoles. He has also held general management and marketing positions at Silicon Graphics and served as chairman and CEO of Multigen-Paradigm
Rolston's arrival at the company is not your typical story of a startup changing guard due startup growing pains. It's challenging enough to run a five year old startup venture in the chip business, but Rolston has an added task: to rally a team which was coping with the in-office triple homicide that claimed the life of the former CEO.
In late November 2008, three executives at SiPort's offices were shot dead by a former employee. CEO Sid Agarwal, operations VP Brigh Pugh and HR manager Marilyn Lewis lost their lives in the incident. Jing Hua Wu was accused of gunning down the team members after being fired from his engineering post hours earlier.
After lengthy delays, Wu was indicted on February 4, 2020 by a grand jury to stand trial for the murders. It was one of Silicon Valley's most heinous crimes and the SiPort team will have to move forward with its new leader while the trial plays out.
